Years taking Pilates: since 2000

Hobbies: I am a voracious reader. I love horseback riding, hiking, lounging by the pool (with a great book in hand, of course), watching old films, walking around the great city of Chicago, cooking, learning new languages, and globe trotting!
Philosophy statement: “[Physical fitness is] the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.” ~ Joseph Pilates
Favorite Pilates exercise and why: Short Spine and Dive for a Pearl. Short Spine because it increases flexibility, develops balance, and improves the alignment of the spine. Dive for a Pearl because it strengthens and elongates the latissimus dorsi and the internal and external obliques, while engaging the psoas, quads, and the gluts.
How Pilates helped me: To me, Pilates is more of a lifestyle rather than a method of exercise, as so many of the principles that are taught in class extend into my daily life. I can say that practicing Pilates has enabled me to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the mind/body connection by awakening a greater awareness of the power of movement and the proper alignment of the spine. Each movement challenges the body to work through tightness and pain, in conjunction with training the mind to work through doubt and fear… Its value is priceless because my practice has become the clarity of my mind, the strength of my body, and the light in my soul- and to have the ability to teach others to experience this bliss; is a satisfaction that knows no bounds.
Why I enjoy teaching Pilates: I remember how frustrating exercise was and what a revelation Pilates was for me. I love seeing that same feeling in someone else’s eyes.
